GMB Members to Hold Santa Demo At Barking & Dagenham Council Cabinet Meeting To Stop £2,000 Pay Cut For Refuse & Street Cleaning Service
The need for the council to make cuts is the result of Tory policies and GMB is calling on Barking & Dagenham councillors not to carry out Tory led cuts to the detriment of working people says GMB.
GMB, the union for council workers, will hold a demo this evening outside Barking & Dagenham Town Hall calling on Barking & Dagenham council to stop a proposed pay cut of £2,000 for the borough’s Refuse and Street Cleaning workers.
The demo will take place from:
BARKING TOWN HALL
1 TOWN SQUARE
Prior to the start of the Cabinet meeting at 18.00, Santa will give out GMB beanie hats from his sack and GMB members will circulate Christmas Ebenezer Scrooge themed leaflets to residents. The leaflets, addressed to Council Leader Rodwell, are reminding council members of the impact of the cuts on the workers lives, long into the future. The need for the council to make cuts is the result of Tory policies and GMB is calling on the Labour Group not to carry out Tory led cuts to the detriment of working people.
The leaflet SANTA STOP reads (see below):
GMB AND SANTA SAYS STOP !!
Dear Cllr Rodwell and the Labour Group
Refuse / Street cleansing workers and their families bid you
A Christmas message clear and true.
Before you and your Group raise the glass of festive cheer
Celebrating Tories spending cuts this coming year
Stop and think of those who will suffer year upon year
If you and your Group vote to cut Refuse/Street Cleansing pay, by £2000 as we fear.
REMEMBER, COUNCILLOR, AFTER SLEEPING ON IT, EBENEZER SAW THE ERROR OF HIS WAYS….
Keith Williams, GMB Regional Organiser said, “GMB fear that this is merely the beginning of an all-out attack on council workers pay and conditions of work. GMB members are calling on their elected Councillors not to allow the need for the council to save money as the result of Tory policies to be to the detriment of working people.”
